Assisi Hospital, Mukkoottuthara, was established in 1987 by Franciscan sisters, with 100 beds to provide health care facilities to the remote parts of Kottayam District. It is now owned and managed by the DIOCESE OF VIJAYAPURAM, under the patronage of RT. REV. DR. SEBASTIAN THEKKETHECHERIL. Assisi Hospital is a 100 bedded Multi specialty hospital with specialties in 24×7 Emergency Department, General Medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, Pediatrics General & Orthopedic Surgery, ENT, Dental and Psychiatry . The year 2012 is marked with the establishment of collegiate programme and Subsequent development in the clinical area with new Departments &Infrastructure Regular r Franciscan Tertiary Sisters opened a house in the Diocese of Vijayapuram near Vimalagiri Cathedral in the year 1977. The aim of the congregation in starting the Mission in Kerala at Kottayam was to reach out to the pour & needy, Sick & sufferings & marginalized of the Vijayapuram Diocese and surrounding Areas. (Assisi Hospital was built is 1987) In view of this mission the congregation planned to start a hospital in St. Josephs Parish, Propose, Erumely. The Travancore Rubbers Company, Erumely had donated nearly 5 acres of land to Vijayapuram Diocese for the sole purpose of constructing hospital. The Diocese represented by late His Excellency Rt. Rev.Dr. Cornelius Elanjical graciously grated this land to the Franciscan Sisters and they willingly accepted the proposal of starting the hospital. The construction was initiated immediately and completed in the year 1987. It was a 100 bedded hospital with Department of General Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology, ENT, and Paediatrics & Orthopaedics and the facilities of Operation Theater, Labor Room, X-ray, Lab, 24 hour Causality service . The hospital was inaugurated by His Excellency the Bishop in the presence of Rev.Sr. Margarita Mongi , the then Mother General of the Congregation. Over the years this rural Hospital steadily developed. In the year 2004 the ownership of hospital was handed over to the Diocese in order to start a Nursing School. The hospital was extended with 150 more beds with the building of Paediatric Block. The Paediatric Block was built in connection with and the memorial of Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Diocese of Vijayapuram. In the year 2005, Assisi Hospital was elevated to the status of teaching Institutions as the School of Nursing was started in the hospital. mThe year 2012 is marked with the establishment of collegiate programme and subsequent development in the clinical area with new Departments & Infrastructure.
